In the Treta Yuga, Ram was born in the house of Dasharath from the womb of Mother Kaushalya to put an end to the atrocities of Ravana.

According to the Hindu Puranas, King Dasharatha performed numerous yajnas to obtain a son. Some time later, King Dasharatha’s three wives became pregnant, and nine months later, Kaushalya gave birth to Rama the seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu.

History Of Ram Navami 2026

Ram Navami is a Hindu festival celebrated by followers of the Hindu faith across the entire world. According to the Hindu Panchang (calendar), this festival falls on the ninth day of the Shukla Paksha during the month of Chaitra.

According to the Hindu scriptures, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, Rama was born in the household of Dasharatha, the King of Ayodhya. Dasharatha also organized a feast featuring *kheer* in order to be blessed with a son. He served this kheer to his three queens. King wondered who would be the successor to Ayodhya after his death.

He was deeply distressed over the lack of an heir. Acting upon the advice of Rishi Shringa, king commenced performing a Yajna to obtain progeny. Nine months after the Yajna, Kaushalya gave birth to Rama. Therefore, in India, this day is celebrated as Rama Navami.

When is Ram Navami celebrated?

In India, Ram Navami is celebrated on both March 26th and March 27th. Ram Navami is observed to commemorate the birth of Lord Rama. According to the Hindu Panchang, it is celebrated during the Shukla Paksha of the month of Chaitra. In many parts of India, Ram Navami is celebrated on March 26th, whereas the Vaishnava sect observes it on March 27th.

This is a festival of faith in the Hindu religion. Ram Navami falls during the period of Navratri. These Navratri celebrations span nine days. During this time, people observe a nine-day fast.

During Navratri, people worship various goddesses. Every morning, these goddesses are worshipped and revered. Upon the conclusion of Navratri, young girls are invited for a ceremonial meal. On the day of Ram Navami, massive community feasts are organized at various locations. At these feasts, everyone is served Prasad.

The History of the City of Ayodhya

The city of Ayodhya is also known as the city of Lord Rama. It is a city situated on the banks of the Sarayu River in the state of Uttar Pradesh. In Buddhist Pali literature and Jain Prakrit texts, the city of Ayodhya referred to as Saket is mentioned as a significant city of the Kosala Mahajanapada.

The great poet Kalidas has described the city of Ayodhya as Saket in the Treatise Raghuvansh. By the 6th century BCE, Ayodhya had developed into a city. This city was recognized as Saket. It is stated in the Samyutta Nikaya and the Anguttara Nikaya that Lord Buddha used to spend time in Saketa. In the third century BCE, the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka built numerous Buddhist structures in Saket.

After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, Saket came under the control of Pushyamitra Shunga. In the fourth century, Saket came under the control of the Guptas. During this period, Brahmanism was emerging in Saket. The Babri Masjid was built in Ayodhya during the Mughal era.

In 1992, Hindu nationalists demolished the Babri Masjid. On November 9, 2019, the Supreme Court delivered a verdict paving the way for the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The Ram Temple was inaugurated in January 2024.
