On February 28, 1913, the Socialist Party of America celebrated the first National Women’s Day. The name International Women Day was suggested by Clara Zetkin in Kohapagan in 1910. She was the leader of the ‘Women’s Office’ of the Social Democratic Party in Germany. After this decision, International Women’s Day was celebrated for the first time on 19 March in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. International Women’s Day was first celebrated by the United Nations in 1975. Then in December 1977, the General Assembly declared it to be International Women’s Day. In 1996, the UN declared its first annual theme as “Celebrating the past, planning for the future”. In 2011, the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day was celebrated with great fanfare.
