India Gate serves as a reminder of the glory of the valor of India’s soldiers. The British government built this in Delhi in memory of the 70,000 soldiers who were martyred in the First World War (1914-18). It is 82 meters Height and 9.1 meters width. When was India Gate built?
Prior to August 15, 1947, India was under British rule. The Indian Army served under the British administration. During the First World War, the British Indian Army participated in the conflict. Many British Indian soldiers were martyred in this war. Subsequently, numerous British Indian soldiers also laid down their lives during the Third Anglo-Afghan War (1919). Due to its construction, the Agra-Delhi railway line was also relocated.
To honor the British Indian soldiers who were martyred in these two wars, the Duke of Connaught laid its foundation stone in Delhi on February 10, 1921. It took approximately ten arduous years to build. On February 12, 1931, the British Viceroy, Lord Irwin, inaugurated it. Its design was created by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Why was India Gate built in Delhi?
Sir Edwin Lutyens played a pivotal role in the creation of India Gate. Prior to the First World War, Edwin Lutyens was appointed as a principal architect for the Imperial War Graves Commission in 1917. The primary mandate of this commission was the construction and documentation of graves and memorials for soldiers who were martyred in both World Wars.
On December 12, 1911, the British monarch, King George V, announced the transfer of India’s capital from Calcutta to Delhi. Now, all operations of the British government will be conducted from Delhi. On February 13, 1931, the capital city of Delhi was inaugurated under the leadership of the British Viceroy, Lord Irwin.

India Gate is constructed from red sandstone. Inscribed on the left side of its arch is MCMXIV (1914), and on the right side, MCMXIX (1919). Above the arch sits a shallow, domed bowl, designed to hold a flame on commemorative occasions. It is situated within a hexagonal area with a diameter of 625 meters and spans a total area of 306,000 square meters.

When was India Gate Canopy?

The Amar Jawan Jyoti Memorial is situated within the precincts of India Gate. It was constructed in memory of the martyrs and unsung soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces. This site is located 500 meters away from India Gate. The Amar Jawan Jyoti was constructed in memory of the soldiers who were martyred during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. The memorial was inaugurated on January 26, 1972, by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
On Republic Day, Vijay Diwas (Victory Day), and Infantry Day, the Prime Minister and the Chiefs of the Armed Forces lay wreaths at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. The Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial is guarded by the Indian Armed Forces. You can go to India Gate to see this.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti Memorial Facts

A rectangular platform stands at the center of the Amar Jawan Jyoti Memorial. The words “Amar Jawan” are inscribed on the front of this platform.
